While our cabin was compact (unlike cabins on larger cruise ships), it was well-designed with shelving and hooks above the beds as well drawers under the beds. Quebec City is especially busy in the fall for larger cruise ships that use it as a turnaround port to head back to the East Coast. Royal Caribbean, Cunard, Celebrity, Norwegian Cruise Line and Princess all call there.
Travel Without the Crowds
Guests were very casual, even for dinner, sporting shorts, polos and jeans. St. Lawrence Cruise Lines will evaluate if they can return to 66 passengers next year based on directives from Transport Canada and provincial health authorities. Tipping of ship staff was optional and an envelope was provided in our room. Cabin upgrades included mirrored cabinets over the sink in each cabin providing ample storage space for toiletries and small items, as well as two large wood drawers under each bed.

One of cruise port's busiest days was September 26, 1993, when over 45,000 tourists came to Michael Jackson‘s concert (part of the "Dangerous World Tour"). The port has capacity to accommodate the world’s largest passenger ships of Royal Caribbean's Oasis-class (LOA length 362 m, max capacity 6780 passengers plus 2400 crew). As cruise port, Tenerife is also ranked Spain's second busiest - after Barcelona, handling nearly 1 million cruise ship passengers annually. Tenerife Island is visited by around 5 million tourists annually, making it archipelago's most visited. The island is served by two airports - Tenerife South (aka Reina Sofia) and Tenerife North (aka Los Rodeos).
Itinerary
Following a hearty breakfast of a cheese omelette, toast and coffee, we left on two excursions, one to the 1000 Islands Heritage Museum and the other to the 1000 Islands Boat Museum. When we awoke the storm had passed and the sun shone brightly. We left Gananoque port for a leisurely cruise through the western part of the 1000 Islands through Wanderer’s Channel.
If a break in nature is needed, there’s no shortage of places to experience wildlife up close, head to Zoo Miami or Miami Seaquarium for interactive shows and encounters. With so many options and things to do, Miami is the perfect place to set the tone for your next cruise adventure. Parts of the St. Lawrence River offer dramatic scenery and calm waters, while other areas are wide enough to give a sense of ocean cruising -- and they can feel nearly as turbulent. The majority of cruising on the St. Lawrence is through Northeastern Canada, which is home to nine dominant ports of call.
In fact, you have to book pretty early just to get a cabin with a double bed (aside from a handful that are so equipped, otherwise, all cabins have single beds). Meals are a communal -- though casual -- affair; dining is at set hours and you order off a set menu (with at most two entree choices) though you can choose your tablemates. The waterway is fed by the world's largest source of freshwater -- the Great Lakes, beginning at the outflow of Lake Ontario near Kingston and flowing northeast to the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean. The river spans 744 miles and widens significantly near Quebec City to become the St. Lawrence estuary. Look for discounts and added value on our Additional Savings page.
Considering the river is quite wide at some points, it was quite calm for cruising; all but when another ship passed that created soft waves. Bayside Marketplace, across from the port, is a popular waterfront shopping spot for visitors. Lincoln Road Mall spans 10 blocks of shops— and Miracle Mile is a long string of specialty stores.
The seaport is managed by Autoridad Portuaria de Santa Cruz de Tenerife (port authority company). The cruise port is located just 10 km (6 mi) from Tenerife North Airport and approx 60 km (37 mi) from Tenerife South Airport. The city's bus service is excellent, and it is also easy to pick a taxi almost everywhere.
The few of us that went all complained about the route the pilot took and the brevity of the flight. Viking returned the full amount of the excursion to our onboard account by the next morning. You will have to look long and hard to find a cruise line more fair than that.
For example, the port of Montreal is an exclusive stop for small to mid-sized vessels. (It cannot accommodate larger ships.) These include a number of premium and luxury cruise lines like Holland America, Crystal Cruises, Seabourn, Regent Seven Seas and Silversea. There's also a handful of international cruise lines, such as Fred. Break up with your weekly routine with a weekend cruise from Miami and set sail on a memory filled getaway that’ll take you so much further than a standard staycation. Royal Caribbean® offers plenty of bolder-than-ever weekend sailings to some of the Caribbean’s most stunning shores onboard the world’s most incredible cruise ships — no days off required.
I'm up to 78 countries and 110+ cruises worldwide, and it's the small ship journeys that I love writing about most. And so QuirkyCruise.com was born, an excellent research tool for planning your own unforgettable small ship trip. Once a busy border crossing between Canada and the USA, the 1000 Islands Tower used to get 100,000 visitors a year. These days, the bridges and roads were now devoid of cars, and only a few trucks were moving towards the border. We returned to the ship walking past graceful tall ships turning in the dock area and watching Canada geese swimming around all the small boats at the docks. We had just enough time for some wine before sitting down for our dinner of Duck al’ Orange, with vanilla ice cream and Bing cherries for dessert.
When my brother Sandy and I were deemed old enough, mother took us to Europe by ship. Truly, I will no doubt return again and again to this region to enjoy the warm people, culture, food and genuine hospitality both on the ship and in the places we visited. I was proud to be a Canadian traveling on the Canadian Empress, and it felt like immersing myself in the history and beauty of the St. Lawrence River is something I should have done long ago. As we sailed back to Kingston, we saw the manicured river front homes and cottages with fluttering flags and motor boats rocking in the wake of our ship.
Judi Cohen has travelled to more than 80 countries with her family, and as a tour leader. Writing about her off-the-beaten track journeys by train, helicopter, plane and small quirky cruise ships is her passion. Soak up the sun along the shore and admire the Art Deco gems along lively Ocean Drive. Stroll busy Collins Avenue, sip mojitos in beach bars, dance in ultra-hip nightclubs, and enjoy the best people watching in the city. In Cairns, we did the included excursion and had a hopeless guide, so our review would not have been favourable. Many others did the same tour and had excellent guides, giving very positive reviews.
Our Upper River Expedition is tailor-made for those passengers who want to experience the full beauty and history of the Thousand Islands. Your cruise vacation will depart from Kingston, Ontario to cruise and thoroughly explore the picturesque Thousand Islands before continuing east past Brockville. Cruising downriver past Prescott, you will encounter the first lock in the St. Lawrence Seaway system at Iroquois, Ontario. The Seaway Control Dam here stretches from the Canadian to the American side of the St. Lawrence River and this dam regulates the water depth throughout the Seaway to Montreal.
